Your first family home is something truly special. It’s a place where first and favourite memories are made.
We’ve been asking members of the public about their favourite childhood memories as part of our #MyFirstHomeMemories campaign, and it seems outdoor play and baking provide our most loved and treasured memories.
When we asked people about their most treasured childhood possessions, 13% of people named their bike and a further 13% listed other ‘outdoor play’ equipment such as climbing frames, footballs and cricket sets, meaning 26% of people’s favourite possessions involved outdoor play, whereas less than 5% mentioned a computer or television.
Similarly, when we asked about fondest memories technology made little impact, with 52% of people questioned identifying baking as their favourite memory.
Danny Luke, Quick Move Now’s Managing Director, commented:
We found the results of the research fascinating. Parents worry a lot about children being expensive and organising fun, but costly, activities to keep them busy in the school holidays, yet it seems children really do appreciate the simple things in life, with outdoor play and baking clearly creating much-loved and long-lasting memories.
Many parents will have spent hundreds of pounds in the last month, buying their children the latest technology for Christmas, but will that technology provide such emotive and lasting memories in years to come?
I’m not sure. While activities like baking and sewing are making something of a resurgence with the popularity of television programmes such as The Great British Bake-Off and
The Great British Sewing Bee, it seems that outdoor play is disappearing, with more and more childhood activity moving indoors and in front of screens. This research is a great reminder to us parents to take some time away from technology and go and make some memories kicking a ball around in the park with our children.
