Little did I know when I registered earlier this year to take part in a sponsored walk, that I would be crossing the finishing line on the 30th June 2012 with a total sponsorship figure higher than any monetary amount I have ever raised for charity before.
I wanted to make a difference by supporting a cause close to my heart so chose to participate in the Starlight Walk for Prospect Hospice in Wiltshire in memory of my mum, Linda Berry. Prospect Hospice is the only provider of dedicated end of life care in its local area and the Starlight Walk is one of the Hospice’s fund-raising events in which women are sponsored to do exactly that, walk by starlight!
Raising money to help a hospice that offers support and comfort to more than 1,800 patients a year was worth walking any distance for in my eyes… so, training for a 10km route was the very least I could do!
It was impossible to put my feelings about such a special Hospice and such a rewarding event into words so I decided to tell my Starlight Walk story by giving lots and lots of THANKS:
THANKS to Prospect’s fund-raising team I was able to register for and take part in an exciting event and give something back to the staff members who had cared for my mum and our family so compassionately.
THANKS to Jayne Allen, a fellow Quick Move Now employee, I had company whilst training for the walk every lunch break. As we trained, our walking routes became more and more ambitious and it felt like we covered most of Swindon in an hour’s break!
THANKS to the pre-walk warm-up conducted by the Prospect Hospice team, I didn’t pull any muscles on the way round!
THANKS to my family and fantastic walking team, Linda’s Ladies, (left to right: me, Jean Ricks, Janice Saward, Amanda Saward, Emma Powell and Lydia Saward), I had the chance to discuss comforting memories whilst completing the walk, making the event a time for reflection as well as for fund-raising.
THANKS to Lydia and Janice, Linda’s Ladies looked the part when participating in the event and fully embraced the red, white and blue Jubilee theme – printed t-shirts, deely boppers and glow sticks galore!
THANKS to the weather, all participants now hold a Starlight Walk record – unfortunately, it is the record for being involved in the rainiest walk since the event began five years ago! Although the weather cleared up towards the end of the evening, we were glad we had our raincoats and umbrellas at the ready just in case.
Finally, the biggest and most sincere THANKS goes to friends, family and Quick Move Now colleagues whose generous sponsorship made all of the above possible and enabled me to raise a grand total of £1,000 for Prospect Hospice. I cannot thank you enough.
