A bad neighbour could cost you as much as £37,000 when it comes to selling your house, says new research.
The study suggests that a bad neighbour could knock 8.2 percent off the value of your property.
A good neighbour, in contrast, could add 9.4 percent to the value of your property. The results are a difference, in real terms, of £37,000 when it comes to the average UK property.
Bad neighbour behaviour:
Some of the biggest ‘bad neighbour’ issues affecting the value of a property include broken or boarded up windows (10.7 % reduction), rubbish in the driveway or front garden (6.1 % reduction), and an overgrown garden (4.4 % reduction).
This means being a bit lazy with your lawn mower could cost your neighbour a whopping £9,294 off the value of the average UK home.
The research also questioned homeowners about what they consider to be bad neighbourly behaviour.Respondents suggested that being noisy, unfriendly, untidy and having a loud dog could all be considered bad behaviour.
Of those questioned, 31 percent of those with bad neighbours said it had made them want to move.Another 12 percent said they’ve tried to move or desperately want to sell.
Danny Luke, managing director of Quick Move Now, commented:
Bad neighbours are a problem that many of us will have to deal with at some time or another. Some will cause major conflict, whereas other just may not keep their home as tidy or as well-maintained as we would like.
When there’s an ongoing conflict with a neighbour it can make it very tricky to sell a property, so the best thing you can do is try to resolve the conflict, if at all possible.
